Hauntings At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Since it was built in 1800, The White House has had many eye witness accounts of paranormal phenomena. Cold spots, appearance of apparitions and strange noises have all been documented by its occupants over time. Here are some of those experiences.

Dolly Madison is responsible for the planting of the Rose Garden. During Wilson's term, his wife ordered the garden to be dug up. Dolly Madison appeared before the workers and scared them all off the grounds. To this day the Rose Garden remains just as she had planted it. The front entrance (North Portico) to the White House is the site of an annual occurrence. Every July 7th, the ghost of Anne Surratt appears and bangs on the front door momentarily. It is said that she comes to morn the death of her mother who was hanged on that same day in 1865 for being convicted of plotting the assassination of President Lincoln. Abigail Adams has been seen hanging laundry by staff in the East Room and wandering the hallways as well. The most haunted room is the Lincoln Bedroom. A number of former presidents and first ladies have seen Lincoln's ghost putting his boots on and lying on the bed in this room. This is the same room that Lincoln once held seances in. Andrew Jackson's ghost has been seen and his presence felt by personnel in the Rose Bedroom since 1865.

Here is one more thing that I found interesting...a portion of a letter written by Harry Truman to his wife from the White House. "I sit here in this old house, all the while listening to the ghosts walk up and down the hallway. At 4 o'clock I was awakened by three distinct knocks on my bedroom door. No one was there. Damned place is haunted...."

Creepy...
