Australia's UFO Case

On October 21, 1978, one of Australia's most famous and controversial UFO cases took place. On that night, 20 year old pilot Frederick Valentich mysteriously disappeared while flying from Moorabbin Airport to King Island.

Valentich radioed the Melbourne Flight Service Unit at approximately 7:06 pm. The call was answered by Steve Robey. He was the air traffic controller working that night. Valentich stated that a strange aircraft was "playing games with him" and wanted to know if any other planes where in the vicinity. He described the mysterious craft as having four bright lights on it, metallic in appearance and flying at a great speed. The object suddenly disappeared. When it reappeared, Valentich reported having engine problems. His last words to Robey were "That strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again … it is hovering and it's not an aircraft." Frederick Valentich was never seen again- a seven day land and sea search turned up nothing.

Here are some known facts about this case.

1) More than 50 people reported seeing strange lights on that night and in the area.
2) Three witnesses came forward and stated seeing a green light hovering above the plane.
3) Famed ocenographer Jacques Cousteau sought government permission several times to search for the aircraft and was denied.

Be sure to check out UFO Casebook Files for more information about this case and the actual communication between Valentich and Melbourne Flight Service. Another article to read is Valentich Disappearance: New Evidence and a New Conclusion.
