It was December 29th, 1972, when Eastern Airlines flight 401 crashed into the Florida Everglades killing 103 passengers on board. Both Captain Bob Loft and Second Officer Don Repo were among the fatally wounded. After the crash the airline salvaged a number of parts and redistributed them on their other planes. Soon after, sightings of ghosts on these planes were being reported by crew members and some passengers.
The ghost of Captain Loft was seen on a number of different flights sitting in first class and in the crews cabin. On one flight , a dozen people, including the Captain and a stewardess, witnessed Loft's ghost disappear right in front of them. Even a vice-president of Eastern Airlines had his own encounter with Loft's ghost on a Miami bound flight from JFK. When he recognized the uniformed man sitting in first class as Loft, the apparition vanished. Repo's ghost was also seen by crew members in cockpits and the galleys. It was believed that his ghost was concerned with the safety of the planes and would point out faulty equipment before take off.
In the end, Eastern Airlines removed all of the parts from the planes that were salvaged from the wreck. Following this the sightings stopped.
