Ghosts of Charleville Castle

Charleville Forest Castle is one of the many places in Ireland with ghosts as permanent residents. Built in 1798, for the first Earl of Charleville Charles William Bury and his family, this castle is said to be finest Gothic Revival building in Ireland. The castle remained in the hands of the Charleville family until 1963 when Colonel Charles Howard-Bury suddenly dropped dead.

Today, Bridget Vance owns the property and is restoring the castle to its original beauty. Workers there believe that they have awakened the spirits of those who remain here. Ghostly voices and classical music have been heard throughout the castle. Often the sounds of children playing can be heard coming from the room that was once the nursery. A young girl named Harriet died tragically while playing in the stairwell many years ago. Her apparition has been seen in the stairwell and people have also felt a cold spot brushing past them as they descend the steps. The castle was built on land that was once an ancient druid burial ground. Hooded figures have been seen by members of the Vance family.

This castle has been investigated by many paranormal investigators from around the world and they agree that this is one of the "spookiest castles" in Ireland.

Cool castle!, you know it's gotta be haunted when it has druids and initiation circles, get a load of the looks of it on it's site, very nice, plus surrounded by a 700 year old oak forest

I visited charleville castle a couple years ago. my friend & I had the run of the place...alone. there were a few construction workers, and that was it. we were offered a nights stay there...alone. after spending a few hours exploring, there was NO WAY we would stay there...especially after dark!

I have to save some money and head that a way! Not sure if I could make it through the night at a place like this, but it would be worth a try. Thanks for your comment!

I stayed the night in this castle a few years ago, quite a big group of us and I must say the owners were very kind in giving us the run of that place, but it is spoooky, we went out into the forest and were chased back into the castle by something.

Sounds creepy! What do you think caused you to run, what was this something? Was your fear taking over you guys due to the places history?

It is a nice looking place, but I've gone there twice and was not able to go in. We didn't know if it was open or closed. There were no signs stating hours. The main web-site for Charleville has been down for months and the second web-site stated 12-6pm. And calling the number on the site just goes to voice mail. It would just be nice to know something before trying to make a day of Charleville.

If I come across anything, I will post it for you here.

Myself & a few friends visited the castle on sunday 31st Aug. The front door was locked and nobody answered when we rang the bell. There were workers around the side so we asked them if we could see the inside of the castle. 1 of them unlocked the door & gave us a tour whilst telling us spooky things about the castle! It is WELL worth the visit. Go, if you get the opportunity!!

I would love to live in this castle if it was haunted. I know ghost are real but I am not scared of them. I used to live on a grave and I saw a lot of paranormal activity.

I'm going to Ireland at the end of May/first of June. Charleville Castle is on my list to see and experience. That would be so cool if I could spend a night there. I'll let you all know what happened when I get back.

their is a show on T.V called scariest places on earth.(they send families to places to investigate the paranormal.) Today for St.Patrick's day, they sent a family to the Charleville castle. scary stuff happened. they say that the castle was built inbetween what the irish call fairy mounds. They said horrible things happen when you build on, or in the Charleville case in between 2 fairy mounds on their pathway from one mound to the next. Also they said the architect was the leader of an acult. Creepy huh?

I was there today, not the best. all just stories, and if u believe them enough you will think anyting that moves is a ghost. dont fool yourselves, you are more intelligent than that

Man, I was watching Scariest Places On Earth earlier on channal 61, Syfy and Charleville Castle was on there and I'm home alone right now and I'm scared sh*tless because I hear noises, and things moving, and shadows out of the corner of my eye, and I think its JUST the wind but you NEVER know. ~Dawn

We went a few years ago. The door was ajar, so we went in. No one was in evidence, so we looked around the hall, admired the staircase, considered leaving...when a man carrying a toddler girl appeared. He was really pretty vague about his purpose there. He said he was overseeing some college students. We never saw the students. He said the child belonged to one of them. He took us all over the castle, including up the scariest stairs I have ever seen into the tall turret. Tower? If you look at the castle, you'll know what I mean - the skinny one. The view was fabulous. He was very entertaining and told us many stories and legends. Afterward, he turned us loose to wander as we would. We looked for him before we left, to thank him again, but he was nowhere to be found. Very unusual day, that...

I arrived at the castle midway through my research trip into the lost or forgotten ritual lore of Ireland. My brother and I also had the run of the place. In the circular room off the main hall I felt a spirit pass though my body then walk over and lurk behind my brother for a while.

In the basement I heard faint cries and got striking visuals bound servants in extreme pain. In the maze at the back of the castle, I felt it was a confusing area where several odd courtships began.

This was in 2004. It is a weird and sometimes scary place, but Castle Leap, that's a f#@ked place.

This is true.
I was there in 2006 when a huge branch of a tree in the prairie where those sheeps are nearly killed me. My girlfriend started to cry and felt unusually emotionally altered. The oaks are the most incredible thing I have seen, the green of that moss is almost fluorescent.
